I like the idea for the reins =)
Thanks man, i appreciate! ^_O
Really nice man! I love the background :D
Thanks Vanish! It took me awhile to make that kind of sky (i didn't want the average starry night, i was hoping for something a little more over the top), but i'm proud of the result and i'm glad someone noticed! ^^
is good
From my personal point of view it's a complete success! :D But .. I have the "impression" that someone copy you... http://www.shicon.com/participate/art-designs/show/happy_ducati_0
ROTFL, thanks Vanish!
I don't agree with the result of the contest, it's not just for you Nevertheless congratulations!!!
I didn't fully understand what you mean manziana, but thanks anyway. :) I'm honestly a bit disappointed by the final result: i could care less about the money (even if it's always great to win something, and i surely thank Shicon and Ducati for the Euros! :D ), what mattered to me was the possibility to create something relevant, something that could be seen and hopefully appreciated all over the world. That is worth more than anything to me, and frankly it sucks that someone totally ripped off my idea and got the glory. Oh and i'm a male BTW (they referred to me as a "she" in the contest page!)... :B
I can't believe this won. I had the same idea, only 1198s as the reindeer and a Diavel with a red headlight as Rudolph. Oh well, at least the best idea won. Cheers.
Dear Mdk7, dear man :-D we perfectly understand your point of view but what usually happens during a creative brainstorming is that the final best idea comes out from more than one brain. And this is what happened in this case! Ducati asked for a creative card: simple, sober and played on a clear and effective payoff. You had immediately the right intuition and then your colleague, darylk, developed the perfect simple and sober image, with the final payoff "not a so silent night". Even if Ducati is going to send the card by darylk, this is our way to say: your talent is great and you deserve to be one of the 2 winners! We wish you all the best and thanks again for being part of our community.
I see your point and i respect the opinion (also because it comes from someone who's surely far more experienced than me!!), yet i can't help but disagreeing. And that's not because i think i have to be right at all costs (i'm not a d*ck like that :D ), but because i have a huge respect for creativity and original ideas. When this concept came to my mind i looked at all the other creations one by one, just to make sure that nobody else had come out with something like this. If anyone else had had the very same idea, i'd have NEVER EVER tried to mimick his concept and his vision and i'd have immediately scrapped my project to make something different and unique. Because taking a picture from someone else, modifying it a bit and changing a line is FAR from being creative and honest. This was supposed to be a contest where people were meant to express their creativity and their fantasy with the Ducati universe in mind, not a collective brainstorming where anyone could freely take ideas from others and modify them at his own will. Or at least that's how i intended it to be. :D Thanks again for the opportunity and for the reply, sincerely (and without ANY intention of complaining for nothing) Marco
Mdk, congratulations, but your idea is very common as the theme, I do not see why if you got it first, others can not propose them. It is incredible that have been awarded another postcart with your own design on a different background.
Thanks for the congratulations bacco! ^_O On the hot topic: the idea of the Santa's sleigh is kinda common, yeah, but the idea of the Santa's Sleigh flying over a full moon and with Ducatis instead of reindeers is frankly a little less popular IMHO. And this whole thing is more a philosophical matter from my point of view: if someone else had an idea before you, that's HIS idea... and since this is a contest, you should respect the vision and the timing and leave that concept to the original artist and come up with something that's fully personal and 100% YOURS. Just to make it even clearer: when one week ago the callygrams thing suddenly came to my mind ( http://www.shicon.com/participate/art-designs/show/in_other_words_0 ) since that idea was in a way something kinda common as well i looked at all the 800+ works uploaded up to that point and then, when i realized nobody else had already submitted something along those lines, i started my work. I hope you understand what i meant now, and i'm totally here to talk about it if you feel like. :)
I frankly don’t see the point of this polemic. In my opinion both cards are really banal and not so well realized. I just can’t believe that won an idea even a 5 year old kid could come up with. But I don’t mean to be polemic with you, guys.. those I’m really disappointed by is Ducati people.. I thought they would have chose an unusual and intelligent art work. That’s why in my opinion Dennyshow78 should have been the winner with his simple, smart and elegant scrap paper card.
Still, I think this is not right. It supposed to be a sigle winner. That means that next time I apply for a contest I must prepare to split the prize and glory. This was my first contest on Shicon and I not very satisfied on how the things works aroud here. Anyhow, nice work Mdk7 even if I think that the idea isn't very original, it's way too obvious, fortunately I'm not the one to decide.
IMHO this proposal doesn't meet the requested briefing: "Avoid religious and strong seasonal references. We welcome creativity aimed at reaching a truly worldwide target, including non-Christian religions. Also please note that not everywhere it is cold or snowing during this time of the year (e.g. NO snow or cabin or mountain or slides)." What's the point using a St Claus imagery e.g. for a Eastern country? By the way here it's a X-mas t-shirt I did 3 years ago: http://www.threadless.com/submission/143052/I_hate_XMas
Sorry, I don’t know that we play “The Emperor’s New Clothes“ The briefing says: a) A truly worldwide target, including non-Christian religions b) Also please note that not everywhere it is cold or snowing during this time of the year (e.g. NO snow or cabin or mountain or slides) My conception to: a) That’s why you see no Santa Claus! b) That’s why you see no sleigh, no reindeer, no snow even in a snow globe and no frozen road! But you see: a surprise to listen, the newest product, the newest feature “attraction“ (ATC), my statement about passion (Hegel’s one is better, flyAngel), a statement about the newest product (thank you Mick and Keith), a joke about his name, peace, the “Monster“ as best sold product, a statement to the race achievement, a welcome to the world of DUCATI, a statement to the spectacular name of the newest product, about the 84 years of brand history, all the current products, a emotional statement to the future of the main thing of this brand: the sport of motorcycling and a surprise with the statement that “passion is nothing without joy“ in a way like it the “DOCTOR“ does it after every race.
My dissent and 'linked to the card room where creativity and' copied (probably without will) as the "copy" has passed the initial inspection or copying where it was considered most likely not view? the idea and 'simple but very effective, but' as it says grafixmo explained the parameters are exactly the opposed to those required in the web ducats with a card for Christmas? and not as Shicon says, even as I I have followed many requests Shicon, and now I find myself surprised that it focused my creativity on the demands of Shicon wrong? ducats from web For some years Ducati send their Christmas greetings by e-mail. But this year there is a novelty in most: Ducati Greetings Contest. We decided to involve our fans and the entire online community to create a Christmas card really "desmo" for our customers, partners and suppliers a real web card theme that expresses the style, design and especially the characteristic passion of Ducati. ducati explicit about asking for a Christmas card?? and on this based on his judgments? I honestly do not seem the same demands made by Shicon. and some other comment I am not the only one in this predicament. my English is not 'the best but I do not think this is due to my fault the direction taken by me and other competitors on the speech card Personally, I have sent my two jobs because '"the idea already existed (in my interpretation of things) Giorgio Manziana Mulliri
I work hard for nothing!! muaaahh!!!! this is the idea winner?????????????? You are crazy man!
I don’t want to sound like a sore loser, but I feel I have to say this. I feel this contest was kind of a waste of time and energy, considering the veeeery late and disappointing results. Awarding a copy-paste person, a kitchy design and off-brief execution. I personally expected one of Gammarco’s, Nikoll’s or Samurai’s designs to win. They were, as the brief stated, “elegant, simple, sober” and very clever. Looking at the winners… I’ll save my comments. But what bothers me most is the criteria on which works were judged. The brief said no reference to Christmas, not even to snow, as around the globe people have different holidays and climate. The winner is… Santa Claus. No reference to speed; one of the “other winners” – with a smart idea behind, for sure – says we go fast. I can understand the smile in mind, the entertainment value, but what about the brief? I look at the winners and cannot stop my feeling of kitch, of ‘90’s advertising and I am sorry for a brand this powerful and this into design for choosing them over other really cool, cunning, elegant, stylish designs with concept behind.
I can honestly understand the critiques towards the Santa subject... I wasn't too sure Santa was something that could 100% fit the briefing (it is indeed something seasonal and pretty western, despite the universal appeal the icon reached lately), but eventually i decided to go for it. To all the other complains (like that this is a lame picture that could have been made by a 5 yrs old kid...) i won't say a word since they pretty much speak for themselves.
The Original: http://www.threadless.com/submission/143052/I_hate_XMas Citations from the winner: “it sucks that someone totally ripped off my idea and got the glory.“ “i won't say a word since they pretty much speak for themselves.“
my critique wasn’t about the picture and the way it was taken or created, though I don’t like it at all. What I said is that I’m disappointed and surprised by the banality of the idea behind the design.. just for kidding I asked my 5 years old nephew for an idea. It took his about a second to say “Santa driving a motorbike!”, which is almonst the same crap of this card
Thank you to all who vote for my artefacts (>Community >Members >most voted) on the 7th place at all, and on the third Place in this contest – whatever that means... It was nice to meet you!
you're wright maro.
I don't have time to read all the comments before mine but there are some things I really want to tell you, first of all congratulations for having the one that Ducati judged as the best idea...(even if I think someone stolen something from you) They can say sometimes ideas come from more than one brain...but I think it was unfair to give the price to a copy in a contest a like this, also with a religious referred payoff (silent night HOLY night, jesus born...i don't think they know that back in east or africa) , that was not supposed to be accepted as written in the brief. So it didn't respect the rules. If they needed a creative team they would have to pay way more than 2000 euro!! clearly the crisis is coming along for them too! second thing i want you to notice is this: http://www.ducati.it/news/ducati_greetings_contest/2010/12/14/1902/index.do ain't it funny?! they changed the color of the moon and more (actually i think it is worst if possible) means that they were not so happy about the other one too!! how comes they give a prize and then change the image!? To be honest I think your was a lot better, even if the idea is a bit banal, but at least it is shining and lighted up, while the other one looks sad! also now with the red moon looks creepy!!!
If you want send your reaction here! I did! http://www.ducati.it/company/contattaci/modulo_contattaci/index.do
Hi LaShi! thanks for sharing Ducari's URL. As a designer (and classic Ducati owner) I've sent them my humble opinion about this "contest".
Easy guys...
Dear mdk7, your idea is really common, please take a look here: http://thumb10.shutterstock.com.edgesuite.net/display_pic_with_logo/321751/321751,1238730010,1/stock-vector-santa-claus-flying-bicycle-27832192.jpg As you can see, there's nothing to special in this creation. I think that could be possible to think exactly the same just because in our mind we got that kind of image taken from commercials, illustration, all around the web, etc. I think that there's nothing to complain since the idea is not so rare to see on internet. Even if santa claus is related with christmas and our religion, this is another point of view, but, I think that you have to say thank you because you won the contest anyway. All the best and congratulations for the winning. Have a wonderful holidays.
"Avoid strong religious references"...and Santa wins! Well done, Ducati! How to make contests the italian way.....
Great X-Mas Bike illustration :-) http://motorcycleart.blogspot.com/2010/12/pete-millars-high-flying-santa.html
beautiful graphics, compliments, but I think the basic idea (Santa Claus) is very very very trivial!
After this disaster... Mr. Paoli, Mr. Torchio, why I am involved and it is not my disaster? Because, Acts 20:35 It is more blessed to give than to receive: first I do my 27 arguments for the workers of DUCATI and their bread in their breadbox and second for all the people who love this brand. This arguments are made of persuasion, in cause of passion! But anyway, these are only the tip of the iceberg! For the rest you are invited to talk with me at eye level and strictly secret, I got the dowry for your girls. The fast, slim, strong, proud... for all your beauties. Iron Pluma
LOL @grafixmo: dude, i NEVER meant i created the concept of a flying vehicle placed in front of a full moon. I mean, ET anyone? :D That said linking other pics with a similar subject seen on other obscure sites just to accuse me of lack of originality is frankly pretty ridiculous because: 1) the picture you linked is surely awesome (and graphically sooo much better than mine, i have non problems admitting what's clear! ;) ), but it's a different thing in terms of meaning... in my image Santa is not riding a bike himself, here the bikes are substitutes for reindeers. So the idea is *still* different from the other. 2) Obvioulsy i did not took inspiration from that, since i didn't know about that site or that picture (in case you wanna know, the inspiration of a starry sky that looks unnaturally bright came from this image of Bayonetta, one of my favorite games... http://www.necromag.co.uk/wp-content/uploads//2009/12/Bayonetta.jpg ... and that's the only image i directly looked at as a reference!). I honestly can't say the same thing for the other 3-4 people that came up with the very idea i came up with weeks after me. And mind that i'm not 100% accusing them of having copied me (even if that's a possibility!), what i'm saying is that if in a contest you come up with an idea that someone has already proposed you should scrap it and create something unique and original. Otherwise one can wait till like two days before the ending of the contest, then take a look at all the best submissions, modify them a bit and upload them... would it be professional and cool, community-wise? I don't think so.
what kind of egocentric are this arguments come from? Unique and original? What we talk about? If you want to build up something black in a black sky it has to have a moon otherwise you didn’t see it at all. But please have a little respect – I was talking about the bread in the breadbox for more than thousand people. The people at least who pay the bill for your unique originality.
I don't want to argue about the quality of that card. But about the contest rules "Avoid religious and strong seasonal references"... Santa (alias San Nicola) wins Was the giury composed by designer or managers? Congrats Ducati
"Wish a Ducati contest" this is what Shicon thinks about the first prize winners http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?topic=16702&uid=388459913625 Jump in the conversation, guys!
As i already said "I can honestly understand the critiques towards the Santa subject... I wasn't too sure Santa was something that could 100% fit the briefing (it is indeed something seasonal and pretty western, despite the universal appeal the icon reached lately), but eventually i decided to go for it". Not having a facebook page (and being proud of that :B) i won't be able to partecipate to the discussion over there, but i'll try to follow it anyway! :D
On the Facebook Page: Shicon wrote "Dear talents, you are right: the 2 winners chosen by Ducati were out of brief. This is not a mystery: all of us can see that. The Ducati team knows that too. But please also note this is not Mdk7 or darylk’s fault. " Ok, I perfectly agree with this thing, and this is absolutely not Mdk7 or darylk’s fault By the way, damn, another "Italian way" to do... Che vergogna!
Panem et circenses. The contest was called: wish a DUCATI. After the “not so silent night“ every cop (listen to the lyrics of Sympathy For A Devil) in western Europe “wish a DUCATI“ by the next police-volume-check.
dont get stressed guys. italian brands tend to be a mixture of great design and technology criss - crosseed with some major flaws and poor factors within ( like Ferrari in F1 ). Winning design should have some cheap feel as it is in position to satisfy everyone who gets it. Great names or great art wouldn't win this contest. that's not a point. it is just about marketing. You need to be understood. It's like a contest for light, disco song. i would just expect apologies from Shicon ( or Ducati, whoever came up with those misleading 'terms and conditions'. It's just simply unacceptable thing to happen. If you expect everyone to obey your rules you should do it as well. To me it's a bit scandalous as left hundreds of contenders gobsmacked feeling cheated. I mean, above all, all those young guys who take it more seriously. Shame. ) However, Ducati's made up for their 'first prize' decision with special prizes. That's how it works. If you skim through all design you will probably place winning design(s) somewhere in the middle. and that is what they look for. That ain't graphic design, art work or creative directing contest. bear it in mind guys and show your best the very next time ! dont feel disheartened !
The world need hero‘s – they die early or never. Sympathy For A Devil “And I was 'round when Jesus Christ Had his moment of doubt and pain Made damn sure that Pilate Washed his hands and sealed his fate“ “Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name But what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game.“ Sealed their face is the reason why you see now at SHICON a surface to go to farce-book. And it is always the same thing: you begin to die when you are born. But it is a shame to look for nails just in front of Jesus birthday. You, SHICON say, that it is not their fault if they win by infringe the rules. I call this “B52 argumentation“. What is the meaning of that: It must be the fault of this burning girl in Vietnam and not the fault of the rest of the world. “Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name But what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game.“ Let me introduce my self. My hero is Pluma and do you know why? When he was (in our development) around 20 Years. He was bad to his older sister. So I take, him, brought him to a table near the window and say to him go to the window. He walks in direction to the window with his tail straight up. I have to take it in my hand and he looks over his shoulder back to me very angry and after that I have to do it again... So he goes around that table and come back to me and fix me with his eyes... I don’t know what he want’ to do. so I put to defence my situation my arm between him and me. I thought it is a pat situation. No, not for Pluma and the satisfaction of his honour. He jumps down, no, not jumps. He let himself falling down, because my feet was straight under the corner of that table. And in the moment when I look down to him in front of my feet, thinking about this strange movement , he grab with his both arms around my heel like a bear trap and bit me in my arch. I was proud and amused about him... But not very long. He starts slowly to force the pressure of his bite. So I understand the game he was playing and I let him play (an Indian feels no pain). But not very long. Only to the moment that my pain was big enough to scream, so he release me and was going back where I took him. Slowly, his tail straight up. If cats could whistle, he would be. This is a hero! And shows more about integrity as what I see after the 9. December in this storm in a teacup. That was the reason why I was talking about the breadbox and some of you were so friendly to waste up the Site with boring arguments. The moment when the idea was born, to bring the discussion to farce book. “Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name But what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game.“ Look, I don’t criticise you, because this cost’s money, you don’t want to pay. That’s the reason why I waste no time to your own list you make... “Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name But what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game.“ Just one more word. In direction of the major owner of DUCATI, the FAMLIY BONOMI. Every communication got a meta – communication. That’s why my third slogan on my forth motif says: Passion is more than a one way road. At least it was me who brought passion in the dialogue with DUCATI – because all I do I do it “in cause of passion“. The passion who I see, when I look at this disaster seams to me so real like the facial expression of the terminator when he looks amazed. Or – for all who are to overwhelmed about this movie – like the look at the watch by the coitus. You know why Ferrari is Ferrari? There was a Enzo Ferrari with his passion. Not some “management“. You can stay the next ten years with your dream or talk with me. I got the dowry for your girls. The fast, slim, strong, proud... for all your beauties. And don’t forget: If ya wanna be bad, year you gotta be good “Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name But what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game.“ Thank you, Mick and Keith. Iron Pluma
i try to be a mentor making mistakes myself. five additional prizes were given by shicon not by ducati. in this case guys you just need to take this competition as a lesson. and at least you know which motorbike not to buy. if they are as competent engineers as they are at the office level y'all should think twice before riding their bikes. quite nice picks by shicon to show that it's all about idea. the simplier the better. however still doesnt make any difference and justify its not very responsible behaviour by letting all those out of brief works into contest for high volume's sake. overall system in shicon ( both php code, its 'policy' etc. ) is mediocre and need to develop itself in better pace than those facebook lamentations and 'new ideas and actions for the next year'. at the end of the day it's really difficult not to have an impression that shicon team don't really know what they are up to. trying is not enough. ducati's contest's just shown how poor whole system is. you have hundreds young guys getting flushes on their faces from excitement only to be told that out of brief submissions get half a grand each. nice room for improvement, though.
Guys, we shared with you all our reasons and next steps. And now you guys are free to trust us, to stay with us, to grow up with us or to leave. That's up to you. Peace and respect.
